ALWAYS LOOKING GOOD
PATRICK ANTOSH PROVIDES THE RIGHT STYLE

HOW DO THE BOYS and girls of QUEER AS FOLK do it? Always looking so good. How does Brian manage to attract all the attention. And where does Debbie get those shocking leggings? Responsible for the clothes of the boys and girls of QUEER AS FOLK is the costume designer Patrick Antosh. It is in his imagination where the looks of the characters are developed, for example, he asks himself what a teenager like Justin would have hanging in his closet. From Teddy’s crumpled up drug outfit to Emmets Jacky-Kennedy dresses - the textile variation for the colorful QUEER AS FOLK group is many sided. Every styling represents a certain type.
For example, what realistic image did he have in mind for Brian? “Brian, that’s me,” laughed Antosh, “exactly my style”.
Debbie’s leggings were a little tougher. Her clothing is a running gag of the series, sometimes screamingly colorful, sometimes purple with shimmering stretch. In order to attain enough of these atrocities for altogether 83 episodes Antosh and his tailor had to reach for needle and thread themselves: “That many Debbie-leggings simply don’t exist.” Debbie a comic? No, her clothing compliments her character and jumps at us just as Debbie does through her ways and her overall being the center of attention.
With Justin, Antosh had a different concept, Justin looks young and like a typical high school boy: Jerseys, sneakers and jeans. “In the second episode Justin copies the disco-style in Babylon, and only in the third episode when he distances himself from Brian, does he start dressing like an adult. The clothing styles develop right alongside the characters. “Likely, the viewers don’t consciously notice this, but clothing plays a large role in developing the atmosphere of every scene.” It is certainly worth watching for: the drug addicted Ted is shown only in grey, colorless clothing, to demonstrate how his life is clouding over. On top of which, he is filmed in front of similarly colored backgrounds: “This way it looks as though Ted is slowly disappearing.” On the other hand, Ben and Michael are arguing. Ben wears his clothes as a university professor does, Mikey stands there in his young boys boxer shorts. “To symbolize every argument I go for the main contradicting clothing”. Is there still such a thing as a gay style? “Actually there isn’t”, believes Antosh. Of course, that would be Emmet, however even Emmet is much less gay than he is extravagant - makes one think of Prince. “Gays and Heteros are becoming more and more alike. I think that QUEER AS FOLK had part in that.”
